HISTORY

The Hand Surgery Centre, formerly known as the Service of the Surgery of the Hand of the Parc Leopold Medical Centre was created on May 19, 1979, and prospered very quickly. It became the « SOS Hand Centre” on January 1, 1980. The centre enjoys excellent national and international visibility. Its strength lies in the fact that the team is composed of orthopaedists, plastic surgeons and “related” specialists who, by working together, offer a complete and high level treatment of all pathologies affecting the upper limbs. The surgeons of the centre provide scientific training and carry out research activities, alongside their clinical activity. They keep up with the latest developments in their field of expertise in order to maintain the highest level of excellence in care.

First housed in the Park Leopold Medical Centre, the Centre recently moved to brand new facilities near the Parc du Cinquantenaire (Park of the 50th Anniversary) in response to patient request for integrated and rapid treatment of hand and upper limb pathologies (on-site execution in record time of all basic radiological examinations, electromyography, minor procedures, custom-made splints. A physiotherapy team works in symbiosis with the surgical team to ensure optimal treatment of all surgical and non-operative pathologies.

The centre is currently accredited by the FESSH (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand) as a centre for replantation and traumatology of the hand since 2011. It ensures availability for any treatment of complex upper limb trauma.

The centre is one of the 3 Belgian centres currently recognised by the FESSH, the only one in the Brussels region, ensuring that patients are recruited well beyond hospital borders.
